Presidents' Day 2025: Show up and Stand Up!

It's beginning. A crowd gathers on the steps of Alameda City Hall for Presidents' Day Holiday "Not My President" Protest on President's Day 2025.

I was forwarded a notice of scheduled protests and decided that I needed to show up and stand up! Stand up against Trump and Musk capricious and wanton actions that are destroying services so many of us depend on. Trump and Musk destruction must be stopped. Lots of passing cars honked horns and waved in agreement.

The event's one speaker thanked us and rightly pointed out that this was the beginning of a marathon, so pace yourselves. Onward!

Message from Our Congressional Rep, Congresswoman Simon Let her know your issues!

Take Action! I recommend calling the Congresswoman's DC office at (202) 225-2661

06 Feb 2025
Contact: Sally Chen

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) released the following statement:
"The President's comment about the U.S. taking over the Gaza Strip, developing the region, and displacing more than 2 million Palestinians is incredibly disturbing and unacceptable.
“Let me be clear -- the suggestion for the U.S. to "own" the Gaza Strip is a call for ethnic cleansing and blatant disregard for international law. It also threatens an already fragile ceasefire that will bring home the hostages and relief to Palestinians in Gaza who have experienced untold suffering.

“We have a collective duty to do everything we can to maintain the ceasefire, prevent the spread of further violence, and usher the region into a period of peace, stability, and reconstruction."

Final Bureau of Labor Statistics Report for the Biden Administration shows Positive Results

Last Friday's report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the final for the Biden administration showed  positive results, continuing net increase in jobs and lows for unemployment.

Regardless how this report is parsed, job additions and low unemployment came with Biden's action to recover the country from COVID-driven losses that hit a wide swath of the US workforce.

Biden's recovery actions coupled with a number of his policies policies continue to benefit the middle class and those struggling the most. Biden delivered massive, nationwide infrastructure investment, lower prescription drug costs and many other initiatives that benefited everyone, while standing up for American workers.

The more I look back on these last four year, I see that Biden most often lead with a goal to "do the most good for the most people".

Third Annual Kayaking for Oakland's St. Elizabeth Elementary School Completed Saturday November 23

After three days of high winds, storm and small craft advisories on SF Bay, weather cleared enough for my 2024 Kayaking for St. Elizabeth voyage on Saturday 23 November.

At 9:50 AM, three hours before low tide, I launched off Alameda’s Southshore Beach at Willow Street and Shoreline Drive. Southerly breeze and SF Bay's bouncing chop coming on shore SSW made it impractical to take pictures while heading north toward the end of Alameda Island. You can follow my journey through the pictures I was able to take after conditions lightened up:

Rain clouds passing while crossing the old NAS Alameda ship channel, past the breakwater at the SW tip of Alameda. San Francisco and the Bay Bridge in the background.

Last stretch of open-water paddling along the end of Alameda. Bay waters begin to calm compared to the waters on the first hour and a half of the voyage (Port of Oakland Outer Harbor in the distance).

A squall hits, San Francisco in the background, while making the turn to enter the Oakland Estuary

Entering the sheltered waters of the Estuary, Port of Oakland Inner Harbor container docks to the left.

Passing Coast Guard Island heading for the Park, Fruitvale and High Street Bridges

Smooth paddling through the narrows approaching the High Street Bridge before entering San Leandro Bay to go around Alameda’s eastern shore.

San Leandro Bay’s sheltered expanse ending in marshes at its eastern end. The Oakland Coliseum Complex and hills in the distance

Heading out of San Leandro Bay ready to pass under the Bay Farm Island Bridge

After paddling NW along Alameda Southshore Beach, the final approach to the launch point. Back on dry land after 4 hours and 45 minutes on the water.
